I empathize with your sense of hesitancy. Anathem is a daunting book to pick up. I love Neal Stephenson, but I feel the same way about The Baroque Cycle. I have not yet decided if I'm willing to commit to three thousand pages of DENSE prose set in the 1600s.

I have an indescribable love for Anathem, but the difficulty other reviewers have with the novel makes sense. Most of the reviews I've read have been very polarized, which I understand, as popular appeal is an attribute Anathem lacks. My personal recommendation: if you enjoyed Robert Heinlein (his hard science stuff, not the freaky incest stuff), then Anathem should be right up your alley.

I'm still debating whether I want to read this one. I loved Snow Crash (a lot), but I've read mixed reviews of this, and it's so long, especially for writing described as 'dense'. It's not that I don't think I could handle it, necessarily, just a question of whether I want to, you know?
Great review, though. :)
