Still under construction!
Here is a list of recent fantasy novels I’ve read that left an impression on me. This is by no means meant to be a definitive list of the “very best” fantasy novels; in my opinion, trying to do so would be a fool’s errand. These are merely books I’ve recently read that I would feel comfortable recommending to my best friend or my own mother.
- Neil Gaiman – American Gods (and for more in this vein, check out Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere, as well)
- Guy Kavriel Kay – Tigana
- Joe Abercrombie – The Last Argument of Kings (this is the third book in The First Law Trilogy, which I highly recommend for anyone looking for a fresh but bloody dose of fantasy that isn’t afraid to challenge the genre norms). Best Served Cold, a revenge tale set in the same world, is also very enjoyable
- Tad Williams – Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn (a 4-book trilogy of epic scope)
- J.R.R. Tolkien – The Hobbit / The Lord of the Rings
- Susanna Clarke – Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell: A Novel
- Philip Pullman – The Subtle Knife (book two of the wrenching His Dark Materials trilogy)
- Brandon Sanderson – The Mistborn trilogy, a fascinating epic fantasy series set in a world in which the “bad guy” won 1,000 years ago
